When champion diver, Olympian, owner of impressive abs and wearer of tiny Speedos Tom Daley decided to go backpacking around the world like a typical British teenager on gap year, he couldn’t miss out on Fraser Island. For his itv show Tom Daley Goes Global, he only had three must-see Australian destinations on his bucket list. Of course backpacker paradise Fraser Island was right up there with Sydney and the Great Barrier Reef… and our beautiful K’gari did not disappoint!
After a stunning sunrise ferry ride across from Double Island Point, Tom and his best friend Sophie were ready for their adventure, but – first things first – tour guide Mark had to talk them through the safety points: With the security briefing behind them, they were ready to hit the beach highway. Both Tom Daley and bis BFF Sophie took turns behind the wheel as our very own Mark showed them the sights of Fraser Island. For the two globetrotters, it was another day in paradise… but come nightfall, the two adventurers learned what living like a backpacker really means. The city slickers had to fend for themselves pitching a tent at camp Drop Bear. Hilarity ensued, but we are pleased to report that they managed to set up their temporary abode and thoroughly enjoyed camping under the stars, Fraser Island style, like so many British backpackers before them. We were delighted that Tom and Sophie chose to visit Fraser Island as part of their trip around the world and thoroughly enjoyed their company. Hopefully they’ll be back one day – there will always be a friendly Drop Bear welcome awaiting them The Australian episode of Tom Daley Goes Global aired on itv and is viewable online until the end of May 2014.
